CSMi: WHEN DID YOU START YOUR ATHLETIC TRAINING CAREER?

Carmen Brown: In 2011

WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PURSUE A CAREER AS AN ATHLETIC TRAINER?

I took a sports medicine class in high school and was hooked.

WHAT ABOUT THE ATHLETIC TRAINER’S JOB IS COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOU ASSUMED IT WOULD BE WHEN YOU WERE A STUDENT?

It’s a lot more hours and a lot less pay then I expected but the relationships you build with your athletes are amazing. You also get to see the “business” side of athletics that you don’t see as a student or as an athlete. It make the whole job different.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE THINKING ABOUT A CAREER IN ATHLETIC TRAINING?

Open more lines of communication then you think is even possible. The more you communicate with everyone on your team (coaches, athletes, fellow AT’s) the better everything is. Everyone trusts you and they don’t tend to argue with your decisions if they know and understand where you’re coming from. Have discussions with your coach rather then just sending an injury report holding their starting point guard out of a practice.

HOW IS THE ROLE OF THE ATHLETIC TRAINER CHANGING, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF CONCUSSIONS? HOW DO YOU CONVINCE AN ATHLETE TO STAY ON THE SIDELINES UNTIL HE’S READY TO RETURN?

I’ve never had an athlete not listen to what I say needs to be done as far as a concussion is concerned. It’s nice because we have doctors who are very accessible here, which takes a lot of the pressure required to hold someone out off of me because I have a doctor standing right behind me saying the same things to the athlete and the coach.

HOW DO YOU NAVIGATE CONFLICTS OF INTEREST, SUCH AS WHEN YOU’RE CAUGHT BETWEEN WHAT A COACH WANTS AND WHAT’S BEST FOR AN ATHLETE?

This is where communication comes into play. Explain to them that it’s more important for the athlete to rest and get ready to play in the next game instead of participating in this practice, or maybe this game isn’t as important as the conference tournament.
